The Hahei Resident and Ratepayers Association is a non-profit volunteer organisation whose primary objective is to safeguard, promote and conserve the interests of the Hahei residents and property owners. We cover the area from Hot Water Beach to the Purangi, as shown the map. With the rapidly growing number of tourists visiting Hahei, we do our best to find sustainable solutions that work for EVERYONE – bach owners, businesses, rural property owners, visitors – anyone that loves Hahei like we do! We work closely with Thames Coromandel District Council, Waikato Regional Council, various central goverment departments such Department of Conservation, NZTA, Ministry of Tourism etc. Our effectiveness is based on your support and ideas.  Please feel free to contact us at anytime.

John Jonassen is Chair of the Hahei Residents & Ratepayers Association and brings a strong blend of community focus and business acumen to the role. He has had an extensive career in design, management and providing specialist advisory services in the building and civil engineering industries both in NZ and overseas. As Chair, John leads HRRA in working closely with local and regional authorities to find sustainable solutions that benefit everyone in the Hahei community. A committed local resident, John brings his professional experience and collaborative approach to enhancing Hahei’s ongoing vitality and character.

Vice Chair

Brett Harries

Brett Harries is Vice Chair of the Hahei Residents & Ratepayers Association and brings extensive professional experience in transport engineering and planning to the community. Based in Auckland and a long-time holiday homeowner in Hahei, Brett plays an active role in local infrastructure and traffic-management discussions, helping the village balance accessibility and safety with its relaxed coastal character. With a strong technical background and a practical, solutions-focused approach, he’s committed to supporting sustainable development and preserving what makes Hahei special for residents and visitors alike.

Treasurer

Penne Clayton

My career spans over thirty years across finance, marketing, real estate, communications and corporate sales, and I am at my best when guiding people through complex situations with a calm head and a clear plan. I draw on strong organisational skills, a Legal Executive background and an unusual mix of qualifications ranging from interior decor to environmental management. I enjoy learning anything that helps me support people and solve problems with precision and more than a touch of dry humour.

Community sits at the heart of who I am. I am a Justice of the Peace, have been a volunteer Station Manager with St John for more than fifteen years, helping our local communities across the Coromandel. I also serve as Treasurer for both the Hahei Residents and Ratepayers Association and the Grange Road Water Association, where good governance, steady hands and practical thinking matter a great deal. Every second Friday you will find me at the Hahei Community Library, enjoying the quiet rhythm of shelving books and helping members find what they need.

I value strong relationships, straight answers and teamwork. Whatever the task, I aim to make it easier for others to be informed and feel heard and well supported.

Secretary

Robyn Dalzell

Robyn Dalzell has called Hahei home for the past ten years and has been an owner in the community for more than two decades. With a senior-executive background in banking and finance—working across major institutions including NAB, BNZ, Kiwibank and others—she brings strong organisational and financial know-how to her community roles. Robyn currently serves as Secretary of the Hahei Residents & Ratepayers Association and chairs the local library committee, and when she’s not helping coordinate big events or meetings you’ll find her happily digging in her garden, sharing her love for plants with the wider Hahei community.

Committee

Maggie Beattie

Maggie Beattie is a dedicated committee member of the Hahei Residents & Ratepayers Association and brings a strong focus on community resilience and safety to the village. She has played a key role in updating Hahei’s emergency preparedness plans — including installing backup equipment and identifying the community hall as an emergency response hub. Alongside her husband BJ,  Maggie helps ensure that Hahei is not only a wonderful place to live but also a safe one.

Ray van Beynen

Ray van Beynen is a long-time Hahei resident who brings extensive leadership and public service experience to the community. A former senior officer with the New Zealand Police, he served for nearly 40 years in roles spanning serious crime investigation and tactical operations, and holds a postgraduate degree in Terrorism, Safety and Security. Since retiring, Ray has continued to contribute through local and regional involvement — as chair of the Whenuakite School Board of Trustees , a board member of the Mercury Bay Business Association, a committee member of the Hahei Residents & Ratepayers Association, and leads the Hahei Community Response Group.. Alongside part-time consultancy work, he enjoys ocean swimming, cycling, and outdoor adventures, always bringing his energy and steady leadership to everything he undertakes.

David Pearce

David and wife Beth have had a small holiday cottage in Hahei since 2004, then
moved here ‘permanently’ in late 2023.

Having enjoyed an exciting 30-year multidisciplinary corporate career, David
somewhat rebalanced it through a humbling five years running a national community service organisation.

In 2025 David joined the HRRA committee to make himself useful in the community.

Already active in numerous local groups, David is motivated by the opportunity the HRRA has to productively represent the entire Hahei population collectively.

Tyrell Brown

Tyrell Brown serves as a Committee Member of the Hahei Residents & Ratepayers Association and contributes to the community’s voice on behalf of residents and ratepayers. As part of the HRRA team, Tyrell works alongside other members to help protect the character, environment and future of Hahei. His inclusion on the committee reflects his commitment to the local area and the community’s wellbeing.
